Local Econocast: Episode 3
The Future of Decentralization: Recentralization?
Decentralization is the process of redistributing or dispersing functions, powers, or people away from a central authority. It has been a global trend in the developing world as a symbol of transition to democracy. However, some recent studies have shown that different types of decentralization — fiscal, administrative and political – have differing even opposing impacts on the quality of governance. Does this mean decentralization will transfer to recentralization? If so, what is the consequence for local economic development?
This episode features Paul Smoke, Professor of Public Finance and Planning at New York University. He has conducted extensive research and policy work with international organizations and universities around the world.
In the second part of this episode, Angela Yayra Amoah, LoCAL Project Coordinator in Ghana, will share her stories and perspectives in the development field.
