On the occasion of the 2017 United Nations Pledging Conference, the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg announced its continued commitment to the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) by pledging a core contribution for 2018 of €550,000 and thematic contributions of €250,000 for local development and inclusive finance.

As one of UNCDF’s top donor countries, Luxembourg has become a key partner to UNCDF in the fight to eradicate poverty through “last mile” finance models that unlock public and private resources.

"We are very honoured and proud to work with Luxembourg, a longstanding partner of UNCDF. Their strong and multi-window support received over the years has been invaluable,” said Judith Karl, UNCDF Executive Secretary. “Luxembourg’s contributions to UNCDF’s core resources have helped ensure that we keep our focus on innovation and strategic engagement in Luxembourg’s priority countries, and enabled us to achieve significant results in 2017,” she added.

Luxembourg has supported UNCDF for more than a decade as a donor to both core and non-core resources since 2004.

Luxembourg’s thematic contributions to UNCDF for local development and inclusive finance have enabled UNCDF to develop and invest in important “frontier” areas of financial innovation and local development finance.

In 2017, for example, Luxembourg’s support was also instrumental in operationalizing UNCDF’s agenda on remittances. It helped UNCDF launch, with UNHCR, a technical assistance facility to help financial providers in developing countries strengthen their capacity to reach refugees, other displaced populations, and host communities.
