Financial Services Space—A New and Nuanced Lens for Viewing Gender Gap in Using MFS

According to 2017 Global Findex, Bangladesh has made tremendous progress towards financial inclusion. The country has pioneered innovation in digital financial services, in particular, those available using mobile phones (i.e., mobile financial services (MFS)). For all these impressive achievements, data and evidence have pointed out a significant challenge for Bangladesh. A stark and persistent gender gap—a difference in access and use of financial services between women and men stand out. This gap has highlighted the question: Why are women being left behind?
"Gender is not necessarily a deterrent to access and use of financial services, however, gender differences exist in the design and delivery of financial services."
UNCDF has conducted a consumer behaviour study titled Gender Centrality of Mobile Financial Services in Bangladesh to recognize these differences and identify enablers and barriers faced by women. The study sheds lights on the three factors-the frequency of needs, motivation and convenience are common for women which individually or jointly triggers the use of MFS by women in Bangladesh.
