September 2020 marks not only the UN’s 75th Anniversary, but also the start of the Decade of Action - the ten years remaining to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere. The 17 Goals were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which set out a 15-year plan to achieve the Goals.

Decade of Action:

With just under ten years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, world leaders at the SDG Summit in September 2019 called for a Decade of Action and delivery for sustainable development, and pledged to mobilize financing, enhance national implementation and strengthen institutions to achieve the Goals by the target date of 2030, leaving no one behind.

The UN Secretary-General called on all sectors of society to mobilize for a decade of action on three levels:

  • Global Action to secure greater leadership, more resources and smarter solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • Local Action embedding the needed transitions in the policies, budgets, institutions and regulatory frameworks of governments, cities and local authorities; and
  • People Action, including by youth, civil society, the media, the private sector, unions, academia and other stakeholders, to generate an unstoppable movement pushing for the required transformations.

At the core of the 2020-2030 decade is the need for action to tackle growing poverty, empower women and girls, and address the climate emergency.

UN75:

The UN is marking its 75th anniversary at a time of great disruption for the world, compounded by an unprecedented global health crisis with severe economic and social impacts. Will we emerge stronger and better equipped to work together? Or will distrust and isolation grow further? 2020 must be a year of dialogue, when we come together to discuss our priorities as a human family, and how we can build a better future for all.

Covid-19 is a stark reminder of the need for cooperation across borders, sectors and generations. Our response will determine how fast the world recovers, whether we achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and how well we handle pressing challenges: from the climate crisis to pandemics, inequalities, new forms of violence, and rapid changes in technology and in our population.

But just when we need collective action more than ever, support for global cooperation has been flagging. In many countries, public trust in traditional institutions is in decline and relations between countries have been under strain. Will this pandemic bring the world closer together? Or will it lead to greater mistrust? Global dialogue – and action – is now more urgent than ever.

Your UNCDF Guide to UN75

As the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly is set to take place over the next three weeks, the overarching theme says it all: "The Future We Want, The UN We Need." On the occasion of the 75th General Assembly, UNCDF wants to share the critical role it will play in achieving the future we want--a future that includes achieving the SDGs in the next 10 years, including in the world's least developed countries.

Starting September15th and over the next three weeks, UNCDF will distribute a limited-series, curated UN75 newsletter. This daily newsletter--which will be shared with supporters, partners, and media--will focus on a single theme of UNCDF's work: from our efforts to promote and support transformative investment through local governments and domestic banks, to our supporting inclusive digital economies to equip millions of people to use innovative digital services in their daily lives, to investing in promising small-and-medium sized enterprises to demonstrate that opportunities in the world's least developed countries are commercially viable.

By the end of the General Assembly, we hope to have provided a library of resources that will collectively explain UNCDF's distinct value proposition and importance to achieving the future we want. We hope you find it helpful, interesting and inspiring.
