Summary

Muhange Cross Border Market investment: A demonstration of how UNCDF leveraged its technical capacities and local development finance model to transform a rural cross border community in Tanzania.

The Kakonko District Council cross border market is part of the implementation of the East African Community (EAC) Common Market Protocol composed of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda and part of the UN Tanzania Kigoma Joint Programme’s Youth and Women Economic Empowerment Programme.

UNCDF supported Kakonko District Council by facilitating the replication of the successful Kibaha Town Councils Public Private Community Partnership (PPCP) model at Mnarani market that leverages significant investments from local private sector and the public institutions to build and to operate.

The project solves 3 mains challenges

The lack of storage facilities, toiletries, water supply

  • The sanitary issues of women and infants hygiene
  • The inability for the district to collect sizable amount of fees and levies.

Key results :

  • +150 youth and women have been allotted permanent trading stalls
  • +23 buildings in the village.
  • Water Infrastructure, roads maintenance, access to clean water will be provided by the local government
  • Building of other public services such as Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Police Gender Desk, immigration services
  • Council’s own-source revenues from the area are expected to increase fourfold in 1 year of operation.
  • + 100 women of Muhange Women Cooperative Group have benefitted from trainings on good agricultural practices, post-harvest handling and storage, access to finance, access to markets, and gender awareness
