While the world has watched and continues to wait for the outcomes from COP26 in Glasgow, we look back on some of the highlights from these two weeks, towards raising the profile of locally led adaptation and advancing action with the Local Climate Adaptive Living Facility.

The LoCAL Facility hosted the Locally Led Adaptation Hub at COP26 where over 25 ‘LLA Talks’ brought together representatives from across the globe making their case for locally led adaptation, sharing experience and looking for opportunities to scale up activities.

Also at COP26, LoCAL announced additional funding from donors, including a substantial commitment from Belgium that takes LoCAL well over the 100 million-threshold to a 125 million-US-dollar mechanism. UN Capital Development Fund’s Executive Secretary Preeti Sinha reiterated UNCDF’s commitments to work with new and existing donors to double the funds available through LoCAL within five years and realise national development plans.

“Addressing #ClimateChange is not only a matter for government, it is for each and every one of us to take action. We can act & transform climate change into a real opportunity - only by working together,” said Hon. Meryame Kitir (center), Minister of Dev. Coop, Belgium during signing ceremony @the LLA HUB.

“We stand by our LDC partners and are committed to working with you to help shape your growth and prosperity of your people based on your vision and plans for your countries,” said Ms Sinha at a special event with minsters and representatives from across the LoCAL community on the sidelines of COP26 on Thursday.

Ms Sinha this week also signed an understanding with Hon. Nancy Tembo, Minister of Forestry and Natural Resources in Malawi to activate LoCAL planning and roll-out to realise national adaptation ambitions and empower local communities (photo below).

Representatives from Niger agreed to consolidate and deepen LoCAL operations with new in-country partners. And, in meetings with Burkina Faso, Ms Sinha signed an agreement to begin implementation of LoCAL adaptation activities now that the design process is complete.

Also whilst at COP, Mali joined the team of LoCAL Ambassadors, bringing the total number of LoCAL Ambassadors to 15 – all of them high-level champions advocating for LoCAL to finance adaptation at scale. While Ghana, Mali and Uganda have signed the LoCAL Ministerial Declaration calling for LoCAL to be used to channel finance to the local level.
