Summary

In March 2021 the Zambia Security Exchange Commission (SEC) and UN Capital Development Fund launched the Regulatory Sandbox for Capital Markets to enhance the Zambia digital economy with capital market innovations.

After a round of applications, four companies offering innovations in this market were accepted into the Sandbox. The SEC recently launched the testing phase of the Sandbox, which will enable the fintech companies to test their products in an easy, convenient, and efficient manner, without placing undue risk on would-be investors and the financial system. In addition, the Sandbox will empower the SEC and innovators to better understand the development and application of the innovations as they will be safely introduced in the capital markets.

The fintechs and peer-to-peer lending platforms, such as those admitted to the Sandbox, have an important role to play in Zambia’s economy as they continue to contribute positively towards enhancing financial and digital inclusion and can provide innovative financing solutions to small and medium-sized businesses, which are critical to Zambia’s economy.
