Press Release

EU -OACPS - UNCDF Partnership to Accelerate Digital Financial Inclusion Across the Eastern Caribbean

  • January 10, 2023

  • Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

Today, the European Union (EU), Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) announce the hosting of a Digital Financial Inclusion Technical Workshop Series for the Eastern Caribbean.

The first of the series, the “Advancing the Digital Payment & Financial Inclusion Agenda Across the Eastern Caribbean” technical workshop, will take place between Tuesday January 17th – Thursday January 19th 2023 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. It will focus on two technical themes:

  • Regulating, Licensing and Supervising E-Money and Virtual Assets
  • Improving Security for Digital Finance

The event intends to offer policymakers and related stakeholders considerations necessary for developing a financially inclusive society. Financial inclusion, that is access to a range of appropriately designed financial services (digital payments, credit, insurance, wealth management, etc.) delivered responsibly to underserved individuals and businesses, is an essential tool for eradicating poverty, boosting resilience, and fostering inclusive economic growth.

The event aims to respond to highlighted demands in the region, in particular opportunities to build capacity to regulate, license and supervise emerging FinTech, mitigate risks, and promote a responsible digital finance and financial inclusion ecosystem.

The event will host a public web link for any interested stakeholder to sign on and attend virtually.

This Technical Workshop series is brought to the region by EU-UNCDF-OACPS Digital Financial Inclusion Programme, a four-year joint initiative signed by the OACPS, funded by the EU and implemented by the UNCDF, with Trinidad and Tobago as well as the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) states eligible for services.

The EU, OACPS and UNCDF are delighted to support government agencies across the Eastern Caribbean in their efforts to improve digital financial access and inclusion.
