Kiribati, characterized by its low-lying atolls and vulnerability to rising sea levels and extreme weather events, is at the forefront of climate change impacts.
The UN Capital Development Fund-led Pacific Insurance and Climate Adaptation Programme (PICAP) engaged with stakeholders in Kiribati to understand the growing impacts of disasters caused by environmental hazards on individuals and households across Kiribati and explore financial gaps that could feasibly be filled through climate and disaster risk financing solutions such as parametric insurance.
PICAP is jointly administered by UNCDF, UN Development Programme and UN University Institute for Environment & Human Security. The Programme’s initiatives in Kiribati is supported by the Governments of New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
