This report was commissioned by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) YouthStart Global programme and was drafted by Shalmalee Ghate and by David Kruijff. The field research was conducted with multiple tools and templates developed by Dalberg Development Advisors for UNCDF under the inception phase of YouthStart Global. The report relies on the input of a broad range of stakeholders in the youth economic opportunities ecosystem in Malawi who shared their views and suggestions for the preparation of this report.

Some 78 percent of the 200 million young people in sub-Saharan Africa live on less than $2 a day and only 5 percent have access to financial services. With statistics like these, there is no question that youth have become a core concern in many African economies – yet most financial institutions are not equipped to address them as real potential customers. Lack of access to financial resources is a major constraint for youth transitioning from school to work.

UNCDF recently completed an in-depth financial diaries study to better understand current knowledge, skills, and behaviors of youth that have accessed financial and non-financial services through the YouthStart programme.

YouthStart’s theory of change lies on the premise that: “When accessing the right combination of financial and non-financial services, youth - young women and girls in particular- are better equipped to make more informed financial decisions, build financial (e.g. savings), social (e.g. social networks) and human assets (e.g. skills and knowledge) for their futures and create sustainable livelihoods.”

Este relatório é o produto final fulcral de uma avaliação implementada ao longo de nove semanas em quatro países-alvo, incluindo Moçambique, como parte da fase de conceção do YSG. A avaliação foi efetuada em três etapas, conforme descrito na secção Metodologia abaixo: 1) análise documental e estruturação e conceção dos questionários e ferramentas de investigação, 2) recolha e análise de dados no decurso de uma visita de duas semanas a Moçambique, e 3) síntese final de conclusões para o relatório.
