Financial inclusion is an effective means to achieving a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDGs 1, 2, 3, 5, and 9, which are being reviewed this year as part of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).
With the increasing use of new technologies, including digital payments, greater access to and use of financial services contributes to eradicating poverty, promoting sustainable agriculture, securing health coverage, promoting gender equality, fostering small-scale industrialization and enterprises, and moreover can help in mobilizing domestic resources for financing for development.
Both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development seek to promote financial inclusion by setting out specific targets and actions to ensure full and equal access to formal financial services for all, and the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 70/189 to follow up on implementation.
In this context, high level representatives from select member states and development partners will share experiences and lessons learned on using financial inclusion for sustainable development, and will offer recommendations on the importance of leadership and partnerships to realize the promise of financial inclusion in eradicating poverty, promoting prosperity, and empowering women.
